Kilkenny Castle

Kilkenny Castle was built in 1391. The Butlers pretty much owned the Kilkenny area for centuries. In 1646 this castle became the center of a Religious war for 7 years.
The last restoration of the castle occurred in 1967 making most of the castle consistent with a 19th century decor. We toured the castle inside, however no pictures were allowed. Many rooms were elegant, but I found the kitchen to be the most interesting with it's wood stove and very little cupboard room. There were a few rooms showing the original walls and flooring. Marie kept looking for the dungeon but we never found it. There were however long vertical slits in the towers that were used for arrows. The pictures include those of the castle and the town of Kilkenny.
